Having unique, helpful content is one of the most effective ways to build quality links.  Creating quality content, however, does not have to mean hours of frantic brainstorming and late-night blogging.  It will require a little work at first, but hopefully it won't be stressful.

We built a resource page for a non-profit client that was simply a list of the most helpful links when starting or running a business.  It lists local, state and national resources that new and current business owners would find useful from exporting, to government links, to research assistance and more (http://nawbolouisville.org/infomedia/business-resources.html).  People linked to it because the information was helpful.

Keep in mind the triggers that engage visitors to get them to respond now.  Could you make a tutorial or video that teaches people how to do something?  Camtasia is an excellent tool for creating desktop tutorial videos and if you want to convert the video into Flash or several other formats, you can use Geovid.

Does your product or service do the following?
  • Save time
  • Save money
  • Make money
  • Improve processes
  • Improve the customer's appearance
  • Appeal to a specific brand
  • Remove doubt of settle an argument
  • Promote some aspect of health
  • Promote some aspect of safety
These are all sales triggers that you need to keep in mind when building a source-related website.  Before and during the creation or update of content, keep focused in usability and resourcefulness.  Also, content that is entertaining, although not entirely useful, will also attract links to your site.

One other way is to create news items.  Did you know that legitimate news is not considered duplicate content but rather syndicated content and 100 percent white-hat?  You can start out by writing some news stories about your industry and then publish on a news site like PRweb.com.  It can be picked up by hundreds of other media outlets and thus drive links and traffic.

Next week we will look at writing original articles to generate links.
