With the decline of traditional advertising like television and print, it is getting harder and harder to find effective ways to attract consumer attention.  As a result, more and more businesses are moving marketing dollars toward online marketing and social networking tools.  We have a video on the power of social media on our Xstreme Social home page, which I recommend you take 5 minutes and watch.  One of those, Facebook, can be a high-effective, virtually cost-free solution.

Building a New Way to Talk to Customers

One thing Facebook advertisers and Marketers need to understand is that unlike traditional media, Facebook is not about telling people what to do or convincing them with blunt arguments, it is about creating a conversation with your consumers and finding a way to integrate yourself into their life.

This is the main reason why Facebook is scary for businesses who are used to using traditional methods of marketing (print, radio, TV, etc.).  Facebook users can and will post comments and engage in discussions with other members of your Facebook Page that you might not find complimentary at times.  While you should remove any vandalism on your Facebook Page and there are times that some users need to be blocked, removing reasonable complaints and concerns will only cause more harm than good.  These complaints and concerns give you a chance to interact with your customer on their level and find out what has caused their complaint or concern, hopefully to rectify the situation.  Where can you find a newspaper or magazine ad that will let you communicate with your customer on this level - nowhere.  Complaints can be reverse engineered to provide exceptional customer service and in social media, news of this has a way of spreading as much or more than the news of the original problem did.  It may seem difficult at first, but if you respond well to the people who have complaints or concerns, in most cases they will become even more dedicated to your products and services and become an advocate for your company.

Next week we will look at some great Facebook Apps for business and get a couple of tips on Facebook Pages.
