Last week in part II of this series, we looked at optimizing your press release for clickthroughs.  This week we are going to look at optimizing the editorial.

Press release site are news sites and they take their role very seriously in order to stay in the good graces with Google.  Submitting a press release that falls outside of the criteria of a press release in Google's eyes is likely to get kicked back for further editing.  For some guidelines, visit this guide for online press releases -  http://www.businesscoachingthatworks.com/files/Press-Releases.pdf .

In order for your press release to pass the human editing process, it should follow these three critical editorial points:

  1. Have a Valid And Clearly Stated News Angle from Within Your Company - The purpose of a press release is to announce something new and timely such as a new product or service, a sale or contest, or info about an upcoming event.  The news also needs to originate from the company announcing the news.  Writing about another company's news is an article, not a release.  The reader should be able t determine exactly what the press release is about by reading the title and the summary.
  2. Written in Third-Person - Aside from a direct quote, a press release is written in third person and does not use casual language such as referring to the reader as "you" or the author as "I" or "we".
  3. Attribution of Claims - Claims that could be interpreted as opinions should be attributed in a press release.  For example, instead of stating "....the best mapping software on the market", present an attributable fact such as "...noted as the best mapping software on the market by XYZ Magazine.

If done correctly, press releases can be a very powerful part of your online marketing plan.  Few types of user-generated content can rank as quickly and as highly as a well written press release.  Optimized backlinks withing your release can work to build link value for your site in years to come.
