Last week we introduced Google Places and how important that can be in an Internet marketing campaign and also just for online business presence.  So, how do you get started?

If you don't already have a Gmail or Google account, get one and then claim your listing.  A Google Places Page is created without your input by Google, but claiming your listing provides you with the ability to edit and update content and contact information, provide offers and promotions as well as interact with others on the page (including responding to reviews).  Not claiming your Google Places Page is like walking by your business on the street but not being able to go in.

When setting up your Google Places Page, make sure to put as much info as possible.  The more content you provide, the more Google will reward you.  Make sure to update your content frequently, make sure it is accurate and relevant to visitors.  Google Places Pages that are the most complete and geo-targeted, have a much better chance of being found.

Google has created more than 49 billion Places Pages but only 7 percent have been claimed.  Of that 7 percent, only a very small part actually edit, update and manage their page after the second month.  By the end of the third month, the data that was initially added has not changed.  This instantly lowers the organic ranking as google prefers "fluid" sites - those that are relevant and updated frequently.

Thanks to Google Places Pages, the dynamic organic rankings is forever altered and will reward those who are more attentive and relevant.  Take note, maintaining or having someone maintain your Google Places Page has become a very important item in your online marketing plan.
