Social Media, like other interactive things - video games, food, tv, etc. - can rob you of your precious time if you let them.  You sit down to make a few posts, look up and its 2 hours later.  You need to learn to maintain a viable social media presence in as little time as possible, so you can get back to running your business and making money.  Here are three tips that will help you in your quest to free yourself from social media.

Tip #1 - Manage One Platform Each Day

If you have a presence on multiple social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.), don't try to do them all in one day unless you are using a posting service.  More on that later.  If you don't have a presence and want to establish one, do one at a time.  Don't try to set them all up at once.  Do one, get it right, then move on.

Pick a day and assign it a social media platform - Monday is Facebook, Tuesday is Twitter and so on.  If you don't have enough to fill the week then start over.  Once you have picked your day, then only post on that platform on that day and only spend around 10 minutes.  You should be able to invite new fans, make a post, respond to any posts from previous entries and load pictures or video, if you have them.  First and foremost, respond to any comments, messages, wall posts, etc. first.  They made an effort to connect with you, so make sure you respond to them.

Tip # 2 - Help People and Respond to Questions

If you have a few minutes left, then reach out and help people.    Using searches about topics in your industry, see what people are talking about and if they have questions.  If they do have questions and you know the answer, respond to them.  Don't ask them to follow you, just do your repsonse.  They will appreciate the assistance and will probably follow you just becuase you helped out.  Who knows, they may become a new customer or client.

With a little practice, you should be able to get lots done in your 10 minutes.  Don't be tempted to go over your time limit - do what you can do and leave the rest for the next day.

Remember I mentioned above using a posting service to assist you, a couple I like are Social Oomph and Sendible.  You can type tweets, posts, etc. in advance and schedule when you want them to post.

Good luck and happy posting.
